Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach: Stuart Russell, Peter Norvig: 8601419506989: Amazon.com: Books

Since this version of the book is for the Indian market, I was a bit worried about the potential differences from the U.S. 3rd edition. After doing a first-hand comparison, I found a LOT more similarities than differences. The biggest difference is the absence of the last two chapters. The U.S. edition includes: Chapter 26, “Philosophical Foundations”, which covers arguments over consciousness in machines and the possibility of robot uprisings; and Chapter 27, “AI: The Present and Future”, which *briefly* describes some things AI researchers need to work on before we can build a “General-purpose intelligent agent”. These two chapters are interesting, but I wouldn’t call them core material, so I’m not surprised they got left out. Other than that, the differences are astonishingly minor. The chapters are unnumbered, and some of them swapped places for no reason, but all the content from chapters 1 through 25 is here, plus the two appendixes. The ONLY edits to the text are removals of cross-chapter references. The U.S. version will say something like, “When we discussed whatzits in Chapter 4, we mentioned that they come in two flavors, X and Y”, while the same line in this book will say, “Whatzits come in two flavors, X and Y”. Again, those are the ONLY edits. The exercises at the end of each chapter are the same. In short, if you can do without those last two chapters, buy this version and save your money.

Will Democracy Survive Big Data and Artificial Intelligence?

Many companies are already trying to turn this Big Data into Big Money. The current widespread collection and processing of personal data is certainly not compatible with the applicable data protection laws in European countries and elsewhere. In a rapidly changing world a super-intelligence can never make perfect decisions: systemic complexity is increasing faster than data volumes, which are growing faster than the ability to process them, and data transfer rates are limited. Big data, artificial intelligence, cybernetics and behavioral economics are shaping our society-for better or worse. Big data and artificial intelligence are undoubtedly important innovations. The research area of responsible innovation and the initiative “Data for Humanity” provide guidance as to how big data and artificial intelligence should be used for the benefit of society. With the commitment to an open data strategy, governments and industry would increasingly make data available for science and public use, to create suitable conditions for an efficient information and innovation ecosystem that keeps pace with the challenges of our world. Big data, meet Big Brother: China invents the digital totalitarian state. A first step towards data democracy would be to establish cooperative banks for personal data that are owned by the citizens rather than by corporate shareholders. We have almost unconsciously become dependent on multinational data firms whose free services we pay for with our own data. For this reason, the Data for Humanity Initiative was established, with the goal of disseminating an ethical code of conduct for big data use. Peaceful coexistence is only possible if data scientists are aware of their responsibility to provide even and unbiased access to data. Big data can only offer a sustainable economic and social future if such methods are also used to create and maintain a healthy and stable natural environment. To conclude, we would also like to draw attention to how interesting new possibilities afforded by big data could lead to a better future: “As more data become less costly and technology breaks barriers to acquisition and analysis, the opportunity to deliver actionable information for civic purposes grows. This might be termed the ‘common good’ challenge for big data.”
