I think it’s 50 or 100 more years. That to me isn’t artificial intelligence, that’s computers and using real technology we have today. But those types of things are very real. That’s very different from artificial , you know, R2-D2 taking over your job.” - Steven Mnuchin, Treasury SecretaryThe statement is scream-worthy because millions of truck and taxi driving jobs will be eliminated by the same self driving technology that he thinks isn’t too far away. AI-driven automation will create new jobs and help people to be more productive, but the painful truth is that AI-driven automation of both specific work activities and entire jobs will be incredibly disruptive to hundreds of millions of people around the globe. The McKinsey Global institute and The Obama Whitehouse, respectively, believe that “60% of all occupations have at least 30% of activities that are technically automate-able,” and “47% of U.S. jobs are at risk of being replaced by AI technologies” over the next 10-20 years. If a job consists mostly doing that single task, you can expect people to be replaced, rather than complemented, by AI software. While automation is incredibly painful for us who lose jobs, it can simultaneously improve the quality of life, and in some cases save, the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Freight companies will save $70 billion annually by putting many of the 1.6+ million people who drive heavy trucks in the US out of jobs. Like the radiologist whose job has layers beyond spotting abnormalities in a medical image, the salesperson is more than her ability to track down information. While some jobs are particularly susceptible to being fully automated and not having any need for a human in the loop, it’s more likely that specific activities will be automated, without taking the rest of the job with it. Get Early AccessThe introduction of AI enabled technologies into our work will change all of our jobs and industries, but tomorrow’s most effective individuals won’t be very different than today’s. In an earlier section, we alluded to Jack Clark’s point that while certain white-collar jobs might not disappear due to automation, the demand for them may decrease as companies invest in automation rather than hiring.

Experts Ponder Artificial Intelligence and Cities

When we think of the city of the future, we might think about flying cars and scenes from “Star Trek” or “The Jetsons.” But coming new technologies are shaping deeper and more fundamental changes in our cities. Cities have overtaken suburbs to become a major center for high tech firms and the talent that drives them. Initiatives like Google’s Sidewalk Labs are attempting to deepen the connection between technology and urbanism and transform the city itself into a platform for new technology and innovation. A report by a panel of leading experts on technology, business, and cities takes a deep dive into the changes that will come about as a result of one key new technology-artificial intelligence. Their study, Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030, outlines the dramatic impact artificial intelligence is having and will continue to have for our cities and the way we live and work in them over the next couple of decades. The report outlines what these technologies mean for cities and raises deep policy questions about their impact across several areas of urban life. Here are a few thoughts reflecting on what this new technological might promise for cities. Everyone and their mother is talking about autonomous vehicles, or AVs, which are already being tested on the streets of several cities, including Pittsburgh. We need to be ready for the next time the car transforms the city. Cities have already begun to deploy a wide variety of AI technologies for security purposes. As we’ve seen with this kind of technology deployed for surveillance and predictive policing at the street level, the central question for cities is building trust and eliminating discriminatory targeting. On the hand, tech-optimists see technology like autonomous vehicles, mobile healthcare, and robot teachers freeing us from mundane chores like commuting and waiting in doctor’s offices and making our cities better, more inclusive and sustainable places. The study highlights a need for a new set of strategies and policies to guide the use of AI in the city, spanning legality and liability, certifications, agency control, innovation and privacy, labor and taxation. AI presents a complex set of considerations for cities.
