Concluding Remarks Glossary Bibliography Biographical Sketches Summary We give an overview of the field of Artificial Intelligence. First, some different definitions of Artificial Intelligence are considered. We will present several cases presented in order to give an impression of the current activities in Artificial Intelligence, and will end with our concluding remarks and some references. We will discuss the definition of Artificial Intelligence, look at some trends in Artificial Intelligence, treat some of the trends in more detail, and discuss a number of case studies and applications. Due to the nature of the subject, we cannot be exhaustive, but rather want to give a feeling for research in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Definition of Artificial Intelligence The prospect of creating intelligent computers has fascinated many people for as long as computers have been around and, as we shall see in the historic overview, the first hints in the direction of Artificial Intelligence date even before that. What do we mean by Artificial Intelligence, if even the term intelligence itself is difficult to define? The precise definition and meaning of the word intelligence, and even more so of Artificial Intelligence, is the subject of much discussion and has caused a lot of confusion. One dictionary alone, for example, gives four definitions of Artificial Intelligence: An area of study in the field of computer science. Artificial intelligence is concerned with the development of computers able to engage in human-like thought processes such as learning, reasoning, and self-correction. For some time now, the Artificial Intelligence community has been trying to imitate intelligent behavior with computer programs. In Section 3, we shall discuss some recent trends in Artificial Intelligence. We shall give a short overview of Artificial Intelligence’s history. AI & Machine Learning Explained

In the real world, AI involves machine learning, deep learning, and many other programmable capabilities that we’re just beginning to explore. Today’s AI systems seek to process or respond to data in human-like ways. It’s a broad definition, but it needs to be as broad as possible, because there are a lot of different AI projects currently in existence. If you want a little more classification, there are two types of AI to consider. General: The purpose of general AI is to mimic human behavior as much as possible. General AI systems are good for showy demonstrations and sales – Siri and Cortana are prime examples – but they are inherently limited because of their interaction requirements. Narrow: Narrow AI is focused on a specific problem or situation, and designed to analyze data and form conclusions far more efficiently than humans can. An automatic translator that converts Spanish to English can be considered a type of narrow AI, or software that analyzes stock options and recommends investment ideas. AI can also be classified by how it operates, which is particularly important when considering how complex an AI system is and the ultimate costs of that software. If a company is creating an AI solution, the first question must be, “Will it learn through training or inference?”. This takes a lot of processing power, so most training features in commercial AI are very simple. For a casual example, an AI might infer, “To answer this question, data for yesterday’s game scores must be found; searching list of reliable sports data sets; comparing to favorite teams listed in settings; reporting scores in audio.” But they have no or little ability to change by themselves over time. There have been books and books written about what specific features AI must include to be truly AI, and unsurprisingly, no one really agrees on what these features are; every description of AI is a little different. A more exciting example is self-driving cars, which use AI systems to scan for dangers and choose the appropriate course of action.

Meanwhile Google has enhanced its core search engine, Gmail, Google Street View, Google Photos, Google Translate, YouTube and other applications using A.I. In recent years several open-source frameworks for deep learning have emerged, but Google’s TensorFlow is thought to be the most popular. Googlers have even developed a tensor processing unit to accelerate network network training and predictions beyond what’s currently possible with commercially available silicon. Alphabet’s Waymo is at the forefront of autonomous vehicle research. Alphabet research scientists regularly publish academic papers on their latest achievements, which is somewhat rare in a such a highly competitive industry that values secrecy. A.I. is so important to the company that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has begun. Amazon has long used A.I. to recommend products in its e-commerce business, and it employs robots to move products around fulfillment centers. In the past few years the company has brought in some revenue by selling Amazon Echo speakers through which people can talk to Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant. While Alexa’s speech recognition isn’t perfect, it does quickly respond to user input, and it plugs into an increasing number of third-party services and devices. Building on the public’s fascination with Alexa, Amazon last year introduced AI services for recognizing objects in images and understanding voice and text input. Amazon has also opened a convenience store that uses A.I. to identify the products that customers grab off the shelves. Apple has looked to AI to recognize handwriting, lengthen device battery life and even find the text that could be selected in PDF files. Apple’s virtual assistant on iPhones and other Apple hardware, uses deep learning now, and the company has recently announced the HomePod speaker that packages up Siri.
