“The Relentless Pace of Automation”

In his farewell speech to thousands in a packed convention hall in Chicago, President Obama warned: “The next wave of economic dislocations won’t come from overseas. It will come from the relentless pace of automation that makes a lot of good middle-class jobs obsolete.” The report says greater deployment of AI and automation could boost economic growth by creating new types of jobs and improving efficiency in many businesses. No one actually knows how AI and advanced automation will affect future job opportunities. “We don’t really know what it can do. It’s too soon to know its impact on jobs.” A key part of the answer, he says, will be to what extent the technologies are used to replace humans or to help them carry out their jobs and expand their capabilities. Initiatives like improved retraining for workers who have lost their jobs to automation, and increased financial protections for those seeking new careers, are steps recommended by the White House report.

What is Automation?- ISA

Using our definition, the automation profession includes “Everyone involved in the creation and application of technology to monitor and control the production and delivery of products and services”; and the automation professional is “Any individual involved in the creation and application of technology to monitor and control the production and delivery of products and services.” Automation encompasses many vital elements, systems, and job functions. Automation involves a very broad range of technologies including robotics and expert systems, telemetry and communications, electro-optics, Cybersecurity, process measurement and control, sensors, wireless applications, systems integration, test measurement, and many, many more. Automation professionals are responsible for solving complex problems in many vital aspects of industry and its processes. Automation professionals do and will continue to play a crucial role in protecting us from cyber-attack; enhancing our quality of life; and ensuring the reliability, efficiency, safety, constant improvement, and competitiveness of our electric power systems, transportation systems, manufacturing operations, and industry as a whole.

Automation is the way of the future; not just in the American workplace, but globally. Currently, about 60% of businesses could have one-third or more of their business processes fully automated by modern technologies. Millennials, in particular, have been responsible for increased adoption rates of automation software. Automation software fits all three criteria, so more millennials are pushing for it in their respective departments. How is automation changing those departments, and are some departments more receptive to automation than others? Automating these processes eliminates the risk of human error and frees up human resources. Automation brings significant upsides to a business with very few drawbacks. Manual accounting practices create an environment where human error and inexperience can cost a company money, whereas most automated systems are driven by clear functions and algorithms. Automation in the customer service department has evolved significantly in just the past few years. Platforms like TeamSupport allow for the automated submission, organization, and distribution of tickets to individual team members, and may be able to automate responses to certain types of queries altogether. Of course, the big downside with too much automation in the customer service department is the loss of that uniquely human touch that only a personal interaction can bring. While the crux of sales still relies on human interaction, many processes around sales can be automated-and are automated for many companies. Software leaders like Velocify have created entire suites of products dedicated to automating various sales functions, including lead generation management, lead prioritization, automated calls, and of course, analysis of previous sales efforts. For the foreseeable future, sales will still require a human touch, but the efficiency of automation here is especially powerful; the more time your salespeople can spend on actual sales, the more closes you’ll get.

Article about automation by The Free Dictionary

The history of automation as a branch of technology is closely associated with the development of automatons, automatic devices, and automated complexes. Correspondingly, the technical facilities of automation in this period were developed and used in connection with automatic regulating systems. The second half of the 20th century was marked by further improvement of the technical facilities of automation and a broad but uneven distribution in various areas of the national economy of automatic control arrangements with a transition to more complex automatic control systems, especially in industry; automation of individual units was replaced by integrated automation of shops and factones. Finally, the theory of automatic regulation is giving way to the generalized theory of automatic control, which unifies all the theoretical aspects of automation and forms a basis for a general theory of control. Automated information processing and control includes automatic order processing, word processing and text editing, automatic data processing, automatic flight control, automatic automobile cruise control, automatic airline reservation systems, automatic mail sorting machines, automated planet exploration, automated electric utility distribution systems, and automated bank teller machines.

Beyond Automation

Automation has traditionally displaced workers, forcing them onto higher ground that machines have not yet claimed. After hearing of a recent Oxford University study on advancing automation and its potential to displace workers, Yuh-Mei Hutt, of Tallahassee, Florida, wrote, “The idea that half of today’s jobs may vanish has changed my view of my children’s future.” Hutt was reacting not only as a mother; she heads a business and occasionally blogs about emerging technologies. That’s especially true now that automation is coming to knowledge work, in the form of artificial intelligence. Aiming for increased automation promises cost savings but limits us to thinking within the parameters of work that is being accomplished today. We propose a change in mindset, on the part of both workers and providers of work, that will lead to different outcomes-a change from pursuing automation to promoting augmentation.
