The Real Threat to Our Jobs Was Never Offshoring — It’s Robotic Automation

We’re better at teaching robots to reason than we are at getting them to perceive. That’s good for human laborers in industries that value the latter. Read more at …

The Long-Term Jobs Killer Is Not China. It’s Automation.

Globalization is clearly responsible for some of the job losses, particularly trade with China during the 2000s, which led to the rapid loss of 2 million to 2.4 million net jobs, according to research by economists including Daron Acemoglu and David Autor of M.I.T.People who work in parts of the country most affected by imports generally have greater unemployment and reduced income for the rest of their lives, Mr. Autor found in a paper published in January. Still, over time, automation has had a far bigger effect than globalization, and would have eventually eliminated those jobs anyway, he said in an interview. When Greg Hayes, the chief executive of United Technologies, agreed to invest $16 million in one of its Carrier factories as part of a Trump deal to keep some jobs in Indiana instead of moving them to Mexico, he said the money would go toward automation. Its effect remained strong even after controlling for management practices; job losses in the Midwest; international trade; and unionization rates, found the authors of the study, Allan Collard-Wexler of Duke and Jan De Loecker of Princeton. Another analysis, from Ball State University, attributed roughly 13 percent of manufacturing job losses to trade and the rest to enhanced productivity because of automation. Over time, automation has generally had a happy ending: As it has displaced jobs, it has created new ones. Even as the economy has improved, jobs and wages for a large segment of workers – particularly men without college degrees doing manual labor – have not recovered. Dennis Kriebel’s last job was as a supervisor at an aluminum extrusion factory, where he had spent a decade punching out parts for cars and tractors. Mr. Kriebel has barely been scraping by doing odd jobs. Many of the new jobs at factories require technical skills, but he doesn’t own a computer and doesn’t want to. Labor economists say there are ways to ease the transition for workers whose jobs have been displaced by robots. They include retraining programs, stronger unions, more public-sector jobs, a higher minimum wage, a bigger earned-income tax credit and, for the next generation of workers, more college degrees. The White House on Tuesday released a report on automation and the economy that called for better education from early childhood through adult job transitions and for updating the social safety net with tools like wage insurance. Ms. Johnson in Tennessee said both her favorite and highest-paying job, at $8.65 an hour, was at an animal shelter, caring for puppies.

When Amazon completes its acquisition of the grocery chain Whole Foods, announced on Friday, the e-commerce giant plans to cut prices at the premium grocer while maintaining its reputation for high-quality boutique foods. The push for lower prices could be fueled by automation, staff reductions, and inventory changes. The plans were first reported by Bloomberg and attributed to a source familiar with them. According to that person, Amazon also plans to add automated checkout systems at Whole Foods, which may include the technology under evaluation at the AmazonGo convenience store in Seattle. That would mean fewer workers running checkout lanes. An Amazon representative quoted in the report denied that any layoffs or automation initiatives were planned for Whole Foods. How will Amazon reduce Whole Foods’ legendary “Whole Paycheck” reputation? Its plans could also include inventory changes that would eliminate the most expensive items from shelves and introduce more private-label goods. Whole Foods’ reputation has become a major pain point for the grocer, which has steadily lost sales to lower-priced competition-including Amazon. In February, after six straight quarters of falling sales, Whole Foods closed nine stores. It has already been lowering prices and experimenting with a lower-priced store format with fewer employees, 365 by Whole Foods. True or not, the rumor of job cuts and automation points to a potential sticking point in the pending acquisition. Whole Foods has been recognized as one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For every year since the list was created in 1998. Amazon, on the other hand, has been described as having an intense workplace culture marked by infighting and high turnover among staffers. Work conditions in its warehouse-like fulfillment centers have been described as demanding and even dangerous.

MySQL infrastructure testing automation at GitHub

We have the infrastructure to automate away such operations; in this post we share a few examples of how we build trust in our infrastructure through continuous testing. There are times that they would like a complete set of data from a table so they can test an index change on a production sized table or see data from a certain point of time. These tests confirm that the failover was successful, not only MySQL-wise but also on our larger infrastructure scope. Restoring it from backup, thereby implicitly testing our backup/restore procedure. A single failure in any of the failover components fails the entire test, disabling any future automated tests until a human resolves the matter. The testing procedure illustrated above will catch problems on many parts of our infrastructure. We are designing chaos testing for our production clusters. Chaos testing would literally destroy pieces in our production, but on expected schedule and under sufficiently controlled manner. Chaos testing introduces a higher level of trust in the recovery mechanism and affects larger parts of our infrastructure and application. This is delicate work: while we acknowledge the need for chaos testing, we also wish to avoid unnecessary impact to our service. The migration doesn’t actually modify table structure, but instead runs a trivial ENGINE=InnoDB. The test runs the migration even as the table is being used in production, thus copying real production data and applying true production traffic off the binary logs. Being the sensitive component in our infrastructure that it is, we take care to deploy gh-ost branches for intensive testing before merging into master. We would tests these rigorously, running through our production tables fleet until satisfied these changes do not pose data corruption threat. As we continue to develop our infrastructure we also follow up by adapting tests to cover the newest changes.

The Hazards of Going on Autopilot

With the move toward automation seemingly inevitable, Congress requested that NASA research the effects of the changes on pilots. Beginning in the nineteen-seventies, he published a series of papers that analyzed the interplay among automation, pilot error, and accidents. How were the pilots solving complex problems as a flight progressed along its regular course? How well-suited were the displays and functions to the pilots’ preferences and behaviors? Even more troublingly, a new study published by Casner and Schooler in Human Factors reveals that automation has also caused some pilots’ skills to atrophy. In the cockpit, as automated systems have become more reliable, and as pilots have grown accustomed to their reliability-this is particularly the case for younger pilots, who have not only trained with those systems from the outset of their careers but grown up in a world filled with computers and automation-they have almost inevitably begun to abdicate responsibility on some deeper level.
